Stare into the Whirlpool Galaxy for too long and you’ll find yourself pulled into a dizzying dreamstate light-years from earth. The 51th item in Charles Messier’s catalog of fuzzy objects is both dreamy and didactic.

By studying the light of this spiral galaxy, astronomers hope to learn about star formation and other dynamics of the universe. Supernovae burst forth in the Whirlpool in 1994, 2005 and 2011, shedding light on the lifecycle of stars. And if it looks to you like M51 is playing tug-of-war with another galaxy, you’re right—that’s another astro mystery being explored.

This image is the result of exactly 3 hours of data through my Celestron C6+.063 reducer+ASI533MC Pro camera. I took 200 photos and kept the best 180 for processing. The telescope was damp with dew when I carried it inside at 1AM, but, fortunately, my plastic dew shield kept the optics from fogging up.
